Serbia plays football

Description

The Serbia national football team is the successor of the national teams of Serbia, Montenegro, and Yugoslavia. Until February 2003, it existed as the national team of Yugoslavia. Later, it played as the national team of Serbia and Montenegro, and since July 28, 2006, it has been called the Serbia national football team on the international stage. The team's first participation in an international tournament was in 1920. It represented the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The team twice won the European Championship silver medal (in 1960 and 1968). In 1960, its players became Olympic football champions. In modern history, the Serbs have reached the World Cup group stage three times. However, they were unable to get to the following stages. At Euro 2024, the team again advanced to the group stage. As of March 2024, the Serbian national team is 32nd in the FIFA ranking.

In the qualifying stage for Euro 2024, the team was in Group G with Hungary, Montenegro, Lithuania, and Bulgaria. At the end of eight matches, the Serbs scored 14 points, becoming second after Hungary, which scored 18 points. The Serbia national football team won 4 matches at this stage and lost 2. Another 2 ended in a draw. The biggest victory was the Lithuania – Serbia match, which ended with a score of 1:3.

As a result, the team advanced to the group stage and got into Group C with Denmark, Slovenia, and England. Of these four, only Denmark once was the UEFA Euro champion. Serbia and England were silver medalists, but Slovenia's best result was advancing to the group stage. England is the evident leader of the group, but Denmark and Serbia can still surprise everyone and reach the playoffs.
